In the end, I was pleasantly surprised at how straight-forward the service provider was, and that they actually shipped my canoe for a reasonable price within the timeframe they quoted. All in all it worked out. The car arrived well and in perfect condition. The price was good. But the car got picked up too late and was also delivered too late. And the transport company would not really specify an exact pickup date and time.
